The Bentley car company was founded in 1919 by Walter Owen Bentley, who had previously worked as a racing car driver and engineer. Bentley’s goal was to build high-performance cars that could compete in races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Bentley’s first car, the 3 Litre, was introduced in 1921 and quickly established a reputation for performance and durability. Bentley’s cars were powered by large, powerful engines that were designed to provide plenty of torque and speed.
In 1924, Bentley entered the 24 Hours of Le Mans race for the first time, and its cars quickly became dominant in the event. Bentley won the race in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929, and 1930, cementing its reputation as a top racing car manufacturer.
In the early 1930s, Bentley faced financial difficulties and was acquired by Rolls-Royce. Bentley continued to produce high-performance cars, often using Rolls-Royce engines and other components.
During World War II, Bentley focused on producing aircraft engines for the British military, but resumed car production after the war ended. Bentley’s cars continued to be known for their high performance and luxury, and were popular with celebrities and wealthy customers.
In 1998, Bentley was acquired by the Volkswagen Group, which invested heavily in the brand and introduced new models such as the Continental GT. Today, Bentley continues to produce high-end luxury cars that are known for their performance, style, and craftsmanship.
